How it works
030.berlin is Berlin's open voice channel. It runs right in your browser and needs neither an account nor an app. The only requirement: you are in Berlin.
On the channel in three steps
- Open the page. A pseudonym like “Currywurst36” has already been rolled for you. Change it any time, and you never have to sign up.
- Confirm your location. The Berlin check verifies you are in the city and automatically tunes you to your district's channel. Your coordinates are discarded immediately.
- Hold the button and talk. Release to listen. Whoever is on the channel hears you live.
Fair to each other
- Everyone is welcome. Wherever you're from, whichever language comes easier to you, however your voice sounds — the channel belongs to all of us.
- Be friendly. Behind every pseudonym is a real person from your neighbourhood. Talk the way you would at the corner kiosk.
- No room for hate. Insults, incitement, threats or harassment have no place here.
- Keep the channel clean. No advertising, no spam, no deliberate flooding.
- Protect yourself and others. No real names, addresses or phone numbers — not yours, and certainly not other people's. Stick to your pseudonym.
All of it — plus, for the curious, the old radio lingo with its Q-codes and sayings — lives on the ground rules page.
Frequently asked questions
What is 030.berlin?
Berlin's open voice channel, right in your browser: press the button, talk, release. Everyone on the channel hears you live. Twelve district channels plus channel 9 for the whole city. Not a social network, no feed, just real voices from your neighbourhood.
Do I need an account?
No, never. On your first visit you automatically get a pseudonym like “Currywurst36”. Change it or roll a new one any time. No email, no password, no sign-up.
What does it cost?
Nothing. No fees, no ads, no premium tier.
Do I have to install an app?
No. 030.berlin runs right in your browser, on your phone and on your computer. If you like, use “Add to Home Screen” to install it as a web app, no app store involved.
Why do I have to share my location?
030.berlin only connects people who are in Berlin right now. That is what keeps the channels local and real. A quick check verifies you are in the city and tunes you straight to your district's channel. Your coordinates are discarded immediately: never stored, never logged, never shared.
How do I find the right channel?
You don't have to: after you share your location, you are automatically on your district's channel. From there you can switch channels any time or pick one from the list.
Which channels are there?
Twelve district channels (Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Pankow, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Spandau, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Neukölln, Treptow-Köpenick, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Lichtenberg, Reinickendorf) plus channel 9 for the whole city.
Do I have to talk, or can I just listen?
Just listening is perfectly fine. And your microphone only transmits while you hold the talk button. Release it, and it is off again.
Who hears me?
Everyone who is on the same channel right now. The channels are open like a public square. That is why you appear under a pseudonym, not your real name.
Is what I say recorded?
030.berlin does not record conversations: no archive, no history. Spoken, heard, gone. But the channel is open, and technically any listener could record. Stick to your pseudonym.
Can I invite others?
Yes. Every channel has a “Share channel” button. It gives you a link that leads straight to your channel. The Berlin check applies to invitees too, of course.
Does 030.berlin keep running in the background?
Yes. You can switch off the screen or change apps and keep listening, with controls right on your lock screen.
How much data does it use?
Very little. Only highly compressed voice is transmitted. An hour of listening is in the range of ten megabytes, a fraction of music streaming.
How long can I talk at a time?
Sixty seconds at most, then the channel is clear for everyone again. That way every voice gets through.
What about troublemakers?
Every channel has a “Report channel” button. Whoever disrupts the channel can get a temporary ban.
Which languages does 030.berlin come in?
German and English. The switcher is at the bottom of every page. On the channel itself you speak whatever language you like, of course.
Does it work outside Berlin?
No, 030.berlin only exists in Berlin. Stop by, then we'll hear each other.
